Nestled between Queen Charlotte Sound, Tory Channel and Cook Strait, Arapaoa Island is rich in history – once a whaling hub, now home to sustainable aquaculture and rare marine treasures. En route, stop at a New Zealand King Salmon farm and hear from a team member about the workings of this iconic local industry, pass a working mussel farm and hear the colourful history of the whaling station.
Your destination is Arapawa Seafarms, where Mike and Antonia Radon will personally guide you through their exclusive blue pearl (pāua pearl) operation. This family-owned farm tour offers a truly rare experience. Discover how these iridescent gems are cultivated from pāua (abalone) and learn the story behind their creation – a remarkable fusion of science, nature and craftsmanship. View custom-made jewellery featuring these unique pearls – only available from here and nowhere else in the world.
On your return journey, enjoy a special visit to Lazy Fish, a stunning private retreat tucked away in the Sounds. Wander the beautifully landscaped and lush grounds with a glass of Two Rivers wine in hand and sample premium New Zealand King Salmon in a relaxed, exclusive setting.
Throughout the day, you’ll be treated to full refreshments including morning tea, a delicious lunch and afternoon tea.
