Contemporary garden design - design with nature

Mark Newdick is an award-winning NZILA-registered landscape architect, garden designer and founding director of Local Landscape Architecture Collective in Wellington, a design practice working on a broad range of landscapes from city-wide strategies to small urban gardens. Mark joins us for two workshops at Garden Marlborough, highlighting the experiences that have influenced his work over the years, from growing up in the wild landscapes of the South Island to his time working on historic formal gardens in England, then working with mana whenua back in Aotearoa. Mark is passionate about the promotion of biodiversity and the use of indigenous flora within both formal and informal garden design, and always seeks to “design with nature”. He will showcase some of his most celebrated contemporary gardens and share some of the background work that went into them, providing insights into the design process, techniques and key drivers that shaped them, all of which can be applied to your own garden.

Since graduating from Lincoln University with degrees in environmental management and landscape architecture in 1997, Mark has worked in Australia, the UK and the US before returning home to Aotearoa. His work is frequently featured in books and magazines on contemporary design and has been celebrated with both national and international awards.
