Screening: Beatrix Farrand’s American Landscapes
Beatrix Farrand’s American Landscapes follows acclaimed public garden designer Lynden B. Miller as she embarks on an enchanting journey through the life and legacy of Beatrix Farrand – America’s first female landscape architect. Born in 1872 Beatrix grew up in the privileged world of the East Coast elite and fought through the challenges of working in a male-dominated profession to design over 200 landscape commissions, including the spectacular Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, D.C. and the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden at the New York Botanical Garden.
Although she created gardens for the rich and powerful, including John D. Rockefeller, Jr., J.P. Morgan and President Woodrow Wilson, Farrand was also a passionate believer in the value of public gardens and the power of the natural world to make people’s lives better.
The movie highlights Farrand’s deep understanding of natural beauty, horticultural artistry, and her quiet but profound impact on American landscape design.
Through visits to iconic gardens, Miller engages with designers, scholars and horticulturists in warm, meaningful conversations that celebrate the vision and impact of this pioneering woman. Woven throughout is Miller’s own perspective shaped by years of experience as one of New York city’s leading public garden designers, enriching this lyrical portrait of Farrand’s remarkable life and times.
