Along Spring Creek Tour

Spring Creek which flows through this region of Marlborough has a reputation as having some of the world’s purest water and is a feature of many of the gardens on this tour. The free draining alluvial soil provides perfect growing conditions for these romatntic and impressive country gardens.

Hortensia House

Hortensia House

  • Huguette Michel-Fleurie
Huguette’s Hortensia House is a beautiful romantic flower garden. Masses of colour-coordinated flowers, hazy pastels and blues and yellows match the trim on this Victorian-style house. The Spring Creek bisects the garden, in a peaceful pristine flow. Crossing to the other side via a bridge inspired by Claude Monet’s garden at Giverny just adds to the European flavour of this garden. “Hortensia” is the French name for the hydrangea, one of Huguette’s favourite flowers. She boasts a collection of about 150 different varieties filling the shady areas around this beautiful home and garden.
Bhudevi

Bhudevi

  • Jane Casey & Bruce Miller
Bhudevi is an eight hectare property with a large modern home, an organic sauvignon blanc vineyard, and 1.5 hectares of formal and native gardens along a wide spring-fed creek. The gardens were established in 2009. There is an outdoor sculpture garden, a secluded rock and fern garden, and an elevated garden with views overlooking the vineyards across to the Richmond range. The native garden has many sheltered and open seating areas for enjoying the birdsong, the plants and the outdoor sculptures. Adjacent to the house are smaller garden rooms inspired by formal designs. A citrus garden bordered by a myrtle hedge features a pavilion for sitting, enclosed in wisteria. A small hydrangea garden acts as an extension to the glassed library at the west end of the main house. A delightful potager near the creek features large raised beds and espalier apple trees, and an abundance of vegetables and flowers.
Garden of Gordon & Lorri Taylor

Garden of Gordon & Lorri Taylor

  • Gordon & Lorri Taylor
This rambling country garden is defined by expansive lawns, surrounded by large informal woodland areas featuring mature trees and shrubs. A more formal hedged ‘secret garden’ contains smaller shrubs and perennials. The productive orchard supplies year-round fruit, while the vege area is always a work-in-progress! Bounded by the Spring Creek, the garden is an ever-evolving project, with flowers being regarded as a lovely but secondary complement to a peaceful oasis.
